Farmers to get expert advice from officials to boost yield

DINDIGUL: Besides financial assistance from bankers, agriculturists in farmers’ market here would get technical expertise to boost yield and scale down production cost. Horticulture officials would meet farmers at the shandy and clarify their doubts in vegetable and fruit cultivation. They would also teach innovative methods to boost production, said Collector R. Vasuki.
She was inspecting the Uzhavar Santhai at NGGOs Colony here on Saturday. Efforts were under way to provide additional facilities and enhance infrastructure in the market not only to rope in more farmers but also to boost sales by attracting more customers. First, possibility of adding more shops in the market would be analysed. Vegetable growers would also be encouraged to expand vegetable cultivation areas to increase arrival to the market. Fruit processing techniques would also be given to fruit growers.
Now, bankers have started offering financial assistance to farmers at this market. Hereafter, Horticulture and Agriculture department officials also would meet farmers and help them.
Irrigation management and pest control measures would be tutored, she added. “Farmers should bring quality vegetables to the market to create a sustainable customer base.” Arrival to market
At present, the market has been receiving 15 tonnes of vegetables, including 2.7 tonnes of vegetables from the hills, and 1.4 tonnes of fruits a day. Farmers sell vegetables in 72 shops on week days and in 80 shops in weekends. -Hindu
