40 organic farming villages for Palakkad

PALAKKAD: As part of a State-level programme to start 1,000 organic farming villages for integrated organic vegetable development, 40 such villages have been set up in the district by providing subsidy of Rs.33 lakh to farmers.
The farmers will get a subsidy of Rs.10,000 a hectare. The scheme is being implemented by the Agriculture Department through krishi bhavans. One agriculture assistant in each krishi bhavan will be in charge of a village.
Deputy Director of Agriculture (Credit) Saramma P. Thomas said that vegetable gardens would be set up at 30 select schools. In addition to that, such gardens would be set up at eight vocational higher secondary schools with agriculture course.
Each school would get subsidy of Rs.10,000 for setting up the garden, irrigation facilities and to buy implements. The teacher in-charge of the garden would get an incentive of Rs.2,000.
The school should have at least 20 cents to set up the garden. An amount of Rs.4 lakh would be spent for implementing the vegetable garden programme.
In an organic farming village, a minimum of five hectares would be cultivated by a group of 25 to 50 members. Out of the 40 villages, 24 would be ready for harvest during Onam. In the rest, harvest would be in September-October.
Ms. Thomas said that the government had announced an award of Rs.50,000 for the State-level programme. The best garden in the district would get a cash prize of Rs.10,000.
