ANANTAPUR: The Andhra Pradesh Rythu Sangham affiliated to CPI (M) on Friday requested the National Agriculture Insurance Corporation to extend the deadline for payment of premium for crop insurance coverage for the 2008 kharif season. Leaders of the ryots’ body also submitted a memorandum to Chief Regional Manager of NAIC, Nagarjuna.
In the memorandum, district secretary of APRS P. Peddy Reddy urged the corporation to extend the deadline for payment of premium for crop insurance coverage till September-end. Accidental damage
The APRS requested insurance coverage even after the crop cutting experiments (yield estimation) as farmers would face the risk of crop damage between the crop cutting stage and taking the produce home due to untimely rain, fire accidents and others. Such accidental damage of harvested or un-harvested crop would cause heavy loss to the farmers but they would not get any insurance benefit as the insurance company’s risk coverage was limited only till crop cutting experiment at present, he explained.
However, the farmers in drought-prone areas like Anantapur would need higher assurance viewing their high risk potential. Further, the insurance benefit should be announced immediately after the crop cutting experiments. He also requested the insurance company to publicise the insurance scheme extensively in villages by extending it to the farmers who were not getting crop loans from banks.
NAIC officials were also requested to settle the pending insurance claims in a few villages in Amarapuram, Roddam, Rapthadu and Guntakal mandal pertaining to the 2006 kharif crop loss. The insurance company was urged to announce the insurance claims for the crop loss suffered in 2007 kharif season.
