Fertilizer shortage triggers protest

GUNTUR: Irate farmers on Friday laid siege to agricultural marketing offices, gheraoed marketing committee chairmen and in some places resorted to sporadic violence in continuing protests against fertilizer shortage in the district.
District Collector B. Venkatesham convened an emergency meeting with the agriculture officials in the evening to take stock of the situation.
Over 200 farmers staged a ‘rasta roko’ on the Guntur-Narakoduru road and blocked vehicular movement for over three hours demanding immediate supply of DAP fertilizers. They laid siege to the agricultural marketing committee office where the distribution of fertilizers was supposed to take place.
The officials tried to convince the farmers that the stocks would arrive in a day or two and asked them to take urea and 10-26 fertilizer types.
Leaders of TDP and the CPI(M) later joined the agitating farmers expressing their solidarity.
District TDP president P. Pulla Rao flayed the Government for its “inept handling” of the situation.
Tenali AMC Chairman Paladagu Prasada Rao told The Hindu that they would appeal to the District Collector to immediately release 100 tonnes of fertilizers by Saturday and hoped that the stock would meet the requirements of the farmers.Nani stages dharna
MACHILIPATNAM: Farmers under the leadership of local MLA Perni Venkatramaiah (Nani) staged a 10-hour-long dharna in front of the office of the Joint Director of Agriculture, demanding immediate supply of fertilizers.
