Kharif targets for Gulbarga district may not be achieved

GULBARGA: The kharif targets fixed for Gulbarga district this year may not be achieved as lack of adequate rainfall in the beginning of sowing period and heavy rain in the fag end have prevented many farmers from sowing.
Senior officials of the Agriculture Department informed the quarterly review meeting of the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP), chaired by Cooperation Minister Lakshman S. Savadi, who is also the district in-charge Minister, here recently that only about 70 per cent of the target of 8.33 lakh hectares of land would be cultivated during the khariff season. The remaining area would be covered in the rabi season, they said.
Failure of rain in the crucial month of June and in the first three weeks of July had prevented farmers from taking up sowing of kharif crops.
Rainfall in the fourth week of July revived hopes of farmers of completing sowing, however, the rain continued even after the first week of August preventing them from entering fields, the officials said. They said that for the first time in several years, the target fixed for red gram cultivation (3.25 lakh hectares of land) might not be achieved. Sunflower would be cultivated in the remaining area, they said.Red gram
Sowing of red gram had been completed in 1.8 lakh hectares of land, and there was little chance of farmers taking up sowing of red gram after the second week of August as the crop sown now would be prone to pest attack, they said. The officials said that there was shortage of about 3,000 quintals of sunflower seeds in the district and the State Government had been informed about it.
Mr. Savadi said that he would take up the matter with the Agriculture Minister and ensure adequate supply of sunflower seeds to the district. The Minister said that a survey would be conducted to assess crop loss in the district owing to rain.
Animal Husbandry Minister Revu Naik Belamgi, said that the State had 1.18 million tonnes of fodder in stock. “As of now, there is no shortage of fodder anywhere in the State,” he added.-Hindu
